Maya Angelou Hope into Art Essay - 1343 Words
Maya Angelou: Hope into Art Before delving into a discussion of celebrated writer Maya Angelou, a fuller understanding of the worldview that shapes her work can be gleaned from a brief review of a few lines from the 1962 Nobel Prize winning speech of another celebrated writer, John Steinbeck: The writer is delegated to declare and to celebrate mans proven capacity for greatness of heart and spirit--for gallantry in defeat, for courage, compassion and love. In the endless war against weakness and despair, these are the bright rally flags of hope and of emulation. I hold that a writer who does not passionately believe in the perfectability of man has no dedication nor any membership in literature. (Steinbeck 1)â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Despite the negative events in her life, Angelous works are filled with hope, love and survival. As Angelou says of her life adventures that turn hope into art, There are no natural writers, but there are natural rememberers (Weaver G-10). Angelous last installment in her autobiography series is titled with the first line from her first installment, A song flung up to heaven. By an examination of interviews with Angelou and commentary from critical interpretations, I think I now know the answer of why the caged bird sings. The cage bird sings because of the hope and optimism in its heart that enables it to sing no matter its dour, trapped circumstances. In similar ways, Angelou often used such hope and optimism to survive terrible life experiences, like living through the Watts Riots in Los Angeles and their aftermath. Over the years Angelou had to make tough choices for a female, especially an African-American woman in a racist society. Nevertheless, she exhibited hope, optimism and courage that enabled her to walk the road seldom taken. In one interview Angelou comments about her character in Caged Bird, Annie Johnson, each of us has the right and the responsibility to assess the roads which lie ahead, and thos e over which we have traveled, and if the future road looms ominous or uninviting...step off that road into another direction (KizisShow MoreRelatedEssay On Maya Angelou1280 Words à |à 6 PagesMaya Angelou, named at birth, Marguerite Johnson was on April 4th, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri. Reality Tv Essays - Reality Television, Reality, Popular Culture
Reality Tv Public Speaking Speech Topic: Why is reality television popular? Reality television is so popular because their aren't any good actors or actresses in this world any more, therefore, people have now been creating shows that deal with ordinary people; we are far more entertaining than all those actors and actresses. Secondly, people like reality T.V because they like to see others making actual life time mistakes. For example, a show such as Temptation Island , where people are seducing each other for basic pleasure, in order to figure out if he or she have found their real soul mate. The audience enjoys watching reality television because there are no actual roles to be played or particular lines to be said; people are simply expressing how they truly feel. Personally, I think that reality television is as real as it gets. I enjoy watching those types of shows because it's interesting to know how other people think and view what is happening. I suppose that is another reason why reality television is very popular. In this type of television, you're not always watching people who seem extremely perfect. What you're really looking at is people who don't care about what others think and whom have enough confidence in themselves to perform live before millions of people, world-wide. In conclusion, reality T.V is popular because the audience admires the types of people who are just being themselves and in order to show that they tune in to these programs! Brief Overview of The Freedmens Bureau
Brief Overview of The Freedmens Bureau The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, also known as the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau was established in 1865 to assist newly freed African-Americans and displaced whites following the Civil War. The Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau provided freed African-Americans and whites with shelter, food, employment assistance, and education. The Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau is considered the first federal agency devoted to the social welfare of Americans.à Why was the Freedmen's Bureau Established? In February of 1862, abolitionist and journalist George William Curtis wrote to the Treasury Department suggesting that a federal agency be established to help formerly enslaved people. The following month, Curtis published an editorial advocating for such an agency. As a result, abolitionists such as Francis Shaw began lobbying for such an agency. Both Shaw and Curtis assisted Senator Charles Sumner draft the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bill- one of the first steps to establishing the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau. Following the Civil War, the South was devastatedfarms, railroads, and roads had all been destroyed, and there were an estimated four million African-Americans who had been freed yet had no food or shelter. Many were also illiterate and wanted to attend school.à Congress established the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands. This agency was also known as the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau in March 1865. Created as a temporary agency, the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau was part of the War Department, which was headed by General Oliver Otis Howard. Providing assistance to both African-Americans and whites who were displaced following the Civil War, the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau offered shelter, basic medical care, job assistance and educational services.à Andrew Johnson's Opposition to the Freedmen's Bureau Just one year after its establishment, Congress passed another Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau Act. As a result, the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau was not only going to present for another two years, but the U.S. Army was commanded to protect the civil rights of African-Americans in former Confederate states. However, former Presidentà Andrew Johnsonà vetoed the bill. Soon after Johnson sent Generals John Steedman and Joseph Fullerton to tour sites of the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau. The purpose of the generalsââ¬â¢ tour was to reveal that the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau was unsuccessful. Nevertheless, many southern African-Americans supported the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau because of the aid and protection provided.à Congress passed the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau Act for the second time in July of 1866. Although Johnson vetoed the act again, Congress overrode his action. As a result, the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau Act became law.à What Other Obstacles Did the Freedmen's Bureau Face? Despite the resources that the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau was able to provide to newly freed African-Americans and displaced whites, the agency faced many problems. The Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau never received enough funding to provide for people in need. In addition, the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau only had an estimated 900 agents throughout southern states. And in addition to the opposition that Johnson presented in the existence of the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau, white southerners appealed to their political representatives at the local and state levels to end the work of the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau. At the same time, many white northerners opposed the idea of providing relief solely to African-Americans following the Civil War.à What Led to the Demise of the Freedmen's Bureau? In July of 1868, Congress passed a law that closed the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau. By 1869, General Howard had ended most of the programs associated with the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau. The only program that remained in operation was its educational services.à The Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau closed completely in 1872. Following the closing of the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau, editorialist George William Curtis wrote, No institution was ever more imperatively necessary, and none has been more useful.à Additionally, Curtis agreed with the argument that the Freedmenââ¬â¢s Bureau had averted a ââ¬Å"war of races,â⬠which allowed the South to rebuild itself following the Civil War.

Applying Problem Solving Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Applying Problem Solving - Essay Example There are many methods, which can be used to find a perfect solution to any specific problem. Two of the most widely used methods are persuasive thinking and scientific thinking. In this paper, I will show how I made use of these methods to solve some problems, which occurred in my life. After I got my graduation degree from a university, I decided to do job to earn some money and get professional experience. I applied in a number of companies for the job but did not succeed to get a suitable job in accordance with my educational qualifications. Some companies called me for interviews. Wherever I went for the interviews, the selection committee members required some professional experience, which I did not have at that time. In my home city, I applied in almost every renowned company but did not succeed in finding a good job. After almost six months of job search, I found a job in a marketing firm located far away from my living place. I was recruited in the department of outdoor sales and my salary was very less as compared to my educational qualifications. The salary was so less that it was very hard for me to save any money for my family. I was not satisfied with that job. I did that job for almost a year when I decided to go abroad in order to find a better employment. My parents did not support my decision of moving abroad and insisted me to remain in my home country and continue my job search. In the problem, which I discussed above, I made use of persuasive thinking to convince my parents. I had two main reasons of going abroad for employment. One reason was to find a better employment while the second reason was the huge difference between the economy levels of my home country and the country where I was planning to go for employment. My parents were not supporting my decision initially as they insisted me not to go abroad. I told them that it would be wastage of my precious time

Traditional accounting pricing tools are not fit for the 21st century Essay
Traditional accounting pricing tools are not fit for the 21st century - Essay Example This paper illustrates that since the production of the goods had started the price has been a great matter of concern for both the sellers and buyers. The producers and sellers have been coming up with different pricing techniques and strategies that they found perfect in the scenario they are working. With the change in time and modernization of the society, it has become evident for the sellers to adopt new and better pricing strategies to compete well in market and keep up with the expected prices of consumers as the consumers are always having a wider choice of companies to buy the product that they want in most of the cases. Basically the accounting functions may help in price determination in this modern market place because the accounting functions allow record keeping of all business transactions making it possible to easily estimate the costs and then calculating the prices to be charged accordingly. Several pricing tools have been introduced for sellers and producers in or der to the prices for their products effectively. Accurate pricing is very important for each company in order to attain the long term profitability for the company. It is necessary that the objective of the pricing strategies adopted by a company should be a sign of the complete marketing plan of the company. A pricing strategy adopted by the company should be chosen in a way that it helps in maximizing the profits for the company by stabilizing the sales and attracting the potential customers in market. (Gitman 2003, 57). To determine the price of a product, it is greatly necessary for the company to take in account all the expenses made in the production of the good and that add up to the cost of production. The proper and complete consideration of the all the variable and fixed costs would allow the producer to decide over the right pricing strategy to be adopted also taking in consideration the market trends (Glueck 1980, 153). The producers then utilize the pricing tools in or der to determine the right price for their product. The key feature of any business is to determine efficient pricing strategy, which plays a vital role in order to make the customer perception about the business or product. There was an era when manufactures used to determine the price of the items and retailers simply had to follow it, differentiation would be dependent upon shopping experience, convenience, product range, ambience and quality of service of the retailers (Mankiw 2009, 69). The current market of today globally experiences several fluctuations due to which traditional financial models that used to develop keeping in mind specific variables which were not specifically viable. Hence in order to cope up with the modern requirements of the market and in order to cope up with the fluctuations and randomness of the market new concepts needs to emerge. It is often observed from the past that the changing requirements have forced experts to come up with the amendment in the existing models for financial calculation so that the environmental variables that are more significant would be included in the calculations and the variables that are not relevant or are not highly significant would be eliminated from the model. In order to study the effectiveness of the traditional accounting methods and the need of modern accounting method, it is important to analyze the environmental variables of the current market so that the current pricing strategy is appropriate (Ross, Westerfield, and Jordan 2009, 183). The traditional pricing methods are more focused on customers that are time oriented or money oriented where for some customerââ¬â¢s convenience is the most important factor and for others, price is the most important factor. Apart from these two customers there are some proportion of quality conscious customers as well who seek quality at any cost. The correct pricing strategy actually depends upon the nature of the product as

Transformative Learning Essay Example for Free
Transformative Learning Essay Transformative learning is defined as ââ¬Å"a process of getting beyond gaining factual knowledge alone to instead become changed by what one learns in some meaningful way.â⬠(Wikipedia).à à Michael Tsao, Kasuyo Takahashi, Jamal Olusesi, and Shikha Jain of the University of Georgia, defined transformative learning as, ââ¬Å"learning to purposively question oneââ¬â¢s own assumptions, beliefs, feelings, and perspectives in order to grow or mature personally and intellectually (Wikipedia). Transformative learning was introduced by Jack Mezirow in 1978 as an adult education but over the years, Susan Imel noted that it has evolved into a comprehensive and complex description of how learners construe, validate, and reformulate the meaning of their experience. â⬠(Imel as cited by Mark Smith). According to Carrie Paechster, transformative learning does not only focus upon the transmission of existing knowledge but also acknowledges the importance of new knowledge being produced with in workplace communities.â⬠(p8) He noted that ââ¬Å"a role for a theory of instruction as well as the focus on the social processes, relationships, and resources that are needed to support learning.â⬠(p. 68). à Paechter emphasized that ââ¬Å"instruction in this sense involves ensuring that the goals of learning are clear and people are encouraged thinking beyond the immediate circumstances.â⬠(p.68). à Thus, transformative learning has become an important option for individuals to have, and to experience as this could enhance oneââ¬â¢s potentiality and the ability to cope with the increasing pressures of the day to day circumstances.à It is quite common that there are circumstances that sometimes difficult to handle especially when encounter engine trouble along the way with no one else to help.à This often poses problem not only in matters of schedule but in physical safety as well. International Association for Continuing Education and Training, Juanita S Stein and Shanan Farmer stated that transformative learning ââ¬Å"opens door to substantial learning experiences that can be cultivated in a life long scope of practiceâ⬠(p. 199).à They pointed further that transformative learning provides a perspective and can be associated with strategies that will cultivate an approach to reflective practice, cope with change, and create solutions that will be indigenous to the participantsâ⬠(p.à 199). Design and Implementation Since there are not many resources for an established design and implementation of transformative learning in the university context, here is a practical design and implementation of transformative learning in the university context. The university will adopt a non formal yet practical education in basic and practical know-how which offers basic knowledge and skills in the following fields of experience: Car engine trouble shooting, plumbing and basic life saving technique. This course is designed to equip and empower students to handle unexpected problem by them particularly in a situation where help is not possible. This course is a two months program which classes are to be held every afternoon on Saturdays. The concept of this program was derived from an information relates by Fordham University at an international conference in Williamsburg USA in 1967, about a growing ââ¬Å"world educational crisesâ⬠Non formal Practical education will offer practical education which aim not only theoretically well feed but also practically well rounded. This short-term program has to be adopted by the university as an arm of the university in helping out-of-school youth and adults.à This will be offered free of tuition fee except of miscellaneous expenses.à All applicants of this program must present requirements such as birth certificate, residence certificate, endorsement of the local community officials and good moral character from previous school attended for out-of-school youth.à Those who can complete the program will be given certificates of compliance which he can use in applying for a job and for any purpose it may serve him or her. The classes will be held every Saturday afternoon within the duration of four months during regular classes, and two months during summer classes in which classes are held during Saturdays and Sundays. Critical Discussion of the Design and Outcome Non-formal education is a two-month course designed to provide students a new perspective, a new experience that will help them ââ¬Ëcope with change and create solutions that will be indigenous to the participants.ââ¬â¢ In this course, the experience that the students get will help them realize that they have potentials and they could explore based on this new experience. As they ponder upon their lives, they will come to know themselves in terms of their potentials.à As Jack Mezerow defines transformative learning, ââ¬Å"it is the process by which we transform our taken-for-granted frames of referenceâ⬠(as cited in Eric Digest).à That is, perspective mindset, habits, and mind to make them more inclusive, discriminating, open, emotionally capable of change, and reflective so that they generate beliefs and opinions that will prove more time or justified to guide actions. By participating in the non-formal practical education, as Nancy Franz stated, ââ¬Å"the goal of transformative learning theory is the empowerment through critical reflection for a more participating learning society; the participants are expected to become socially involved particularly if anyone is need of help.à This non-formal practical education is designed to equip and empower participants with practical know-how. à It means that the participants develop a new meaning or perspective of their experience from a new context derived from triggering events and through conversation with others to assess and justify their own assumptions. Thus, transformative learning has become important thing for every adult individual to have and to experience as this could enhance oneââ¬â¢s potentiality. Reflection Most of the students who have undergone non-formal practical education are quite confident and has developed a sense of self-worth knowing that they are not only professional who are experts in office or business related matters.à Confident that in a sense, they knew that within them are the technical skills they have developed out of their new experience. The knowledge that they got from this experience have transformed their minds from a helpless-need help individuals at particular circumstances to-do-it myself attitude.à The transformation of their mindset has enable them to face and to cope up with day to day real life challenges with a sense of pride that they could handle even the worst case scenario. Most of all, the program give the students a hope and an opportunity to gain skills which they can use in order to survive in this world. à Work Cited Franz, Nancy 2007.
